Juneteenth is a national holiday celebrated every June 19th to commemorate the day the last enslaved African Americans were freed in 1885. Notably, this was over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was put into effect. Around 2,000 Union Soldiers marched into Galveston, Texas, to announce that all of the over 250,000 slaves in Texas had been granted their freedom.
Celebrate this momentous days in history by reading some books by African American authors, which highlight and celebrate the black experience in America.
